We Built an IELTS Course for People Who Already Speak English
By Maxine, Founder of LinguaElite | March 2026
When I started LinguaElite, the focus was on helping non-native speakers build their English fluency and confidence. That is still a core part of what we do, and we are proud of the results our students achieve. But over the past year, I kept noticing the same conversation happening again and again in emigration forums, WhatsApp groups, and even among people I know personally.
"I need to take IELTS for my visa application. But I am a native English speaker. Do I really need to prepare?"
The short answer is yes. The longer answer is why we built this course.

The Problem We Kept Seeing
Native English speakers are required to take IELTS for immigration to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, regardless of the fact that English is their first language. There are no exemptions based on nationality for most of these pathways (and as of April 2025, Australia removed South Africa from its list of recognised English-speaking countries entirely). So fluent, educated, professional English speakers are sitting an exam designed to assess English proficiency, assuming they will breeze through it.
Many do not. Native speakers average 6.9 on IELTS Academic overall. Writing scores drop to 6.3. To put that in context, the threshold for most professional registration bodies (nursing, medicine, engineering) is Band 7.0. The competitive range for Canadian Express Entry and Australian skilled migration points starts at Band 7.0 to 8.0. A 6.9 average means roughly half of all native speakers are falling below these targets.
The issue is not their English. It is that IELTS tests a very specific set of exam skills that native speakers have never been taught: how to describe a graph in an academic format, how to structure an essay to meet precise scoring criteria, how to shift register between casual and analytical speaking, and how to manage time across sections that move faster than most people expect.
What We Built
Our IELTS Strategy Intensive is a 6-session, 1:1 course delivered over three weeks via Zoom. It is built around one principle: native speakers do not need English lessons. They need test strategy.
There are no grammar drills. No vocabulary lists. No pronunciation exercises. Every minute of every session is focused on the skills that actually move your score: understanding the band descriptors, learning the specific essay structures IELTS rewards, mastering the True/False/Not Given logic that trips up fluent readers, building a timed writing workflow, and practising the register shift that separates a Band 7 Speaking score from a Band 8.
Here is what the six sessions cover:
Session 1: Full test overview and band descriptor deep-dive. You leave knowing exactly what examiners are scoring and where native speakers typically lose marks.
Session 2: Live feedback on your first essay (written cold, without instruction) plus Writing Task 1 strategy. This is the section most native speakers have never encountered: describing data in an academic format with a mandatory overview paragraph.
Session 3: Writing Task 2 strategy. The five essay types, planning templates, and the Task Response criterion that accounts for 25% of your Writing score and is the single biggest area where native speakers lose marks.
Session 4: Reading and Listening tactics. True/False/Not Given logic, time management strategies, and the prediction techniques that prevent errors in Listening Sections 3 and 4.
Session 5: Speaking performance strategy. Part 1 expansion, Part 2 planning method, and the Part 3 register shift from conversational to analytical. Includes a full mock Speaking test with immediate scoring.
Session 6: Final essay review, score prediction across all four sections, and a complete exam-day strategy so you walk in knowing exactly what to expect.
Three of your essays are reviewed live during sessions as part of the standard package. If you want additional essay feedback between sessions, we offer that as an add-on.
Who This Is For
This course is for you if you are a native or near-native English speaker who needs an IELTS score for immigration, a visa, professional registration, or university admission. You do not need someone to teach you English. You need someone who knows this test inside out to teach you how to perform under its specific conditions and scoring criteria.
It is particularly relevant if you are:
A South African professional emigrating to Australia, Canada, the UK, or New Zealand
A nurse, doctor, engineer, or teacher who needs a specific band score for professional registration
Someone who has already taken IELTS and scored lower than expected, particularly in Writing
A fluent English speaker who has looked at a sample test and realised it is harder than it looks
Why We Are the Right People to Teach This
LinguaElite is a UK-registered English tutoring company. We have been teaching IELTS to non-native speakers for years, and our students consistently exceed their target band scores. I have taken the IELTS exam myself. I know what it feels like to sit in that room, manage the clock, and navigate a test format that does not reward you for being a good English speaker. It rewards you for being a good IELTS candidate.
That experience, combined with our track record of results and our understanding of the specific ways native speakers underperform, is what makes this course different from anything else available. To my knowledge, no other IELTS provider specifically targets native English speakers with a strategy-focused course. Most IELTS prep assumes you need to improve your English. We assume you already have the English. We teach you how to take the test and put your real language skills on display.
How to Get Started
The course is available in two formats: 1:1 (you and your teacher) or 2:1 (paired with another student at a similar level). Both are delivered via Zoom, so you can study from anywhere. We offer two pricing tiers: ZAR for South African residents and GBP for international students.
If you are interested, the next step is simple: get in touch and tell us about your situation. We will confirm whether this course is the right fit, match you with a teacher, and get you started.
